The Atlantic Coast

We'd like to thank Jini's friends José, Leo and Terressa for organsing a visit to the coast this weekend. Special thanks to José and his mother and father for their generosity and loan of their house directly overlooking the sea just south of São Pedro de Moel. We all awoke overlooking the Atlantic today - quite an experience.

The coastline from Nazaré to Figueira da Foz is flat and covered with pine forest and sand dunes. Quiet spectacular and great for an active holiday - excellent for cycling, running, surfing and swimming. The climate is much cooler than Castelo Branco, apparently temperatures rarely move above 26C, even in July or August.

Batalha

On route we were able to visit Batalha, bulit close to the battle of Aljubarrota. On August 14th 1385, two pretenders to the throne of Portugal and their respective allies faced each other, prepared to do battle: Juan I of Castile, nephew of the dead king, and João I, Grand Master of the Order of Avis, who had been crowned king only seven days previously. But I digress - the Mosteiro is a mass of gables, pinnacles, buttresses and turrets and small columns standing within a green valley.

On the way back to Catelo Branco Terresa gave us a guided tour of Figueira da Foz, located at the mouth of the Mondego river, west of Coimbra. Apparently a survey in a national newspaper rated Figueira as the 3rd best place to live in Portugal.

And this crafty photographer got his sneaky paparazzi shot whilst at Batalha. Just goes to show that I'll stop at nothing in my quest for an 'exclusive'.

And finally, just look at that ice cream!
