BrancoBlogger Back in Town

Rohini and I arrived in Portugal Tuesday evening, the 13th June. We treated ourselves to an 'extra' night in Porto taking in the sites and sounds of Portugal's beauftiful second city. The traditional city centre spreads across a network of shopping streets around the Praça da Liberdade and São Bento station. It's very lively during the day with its crowds of people, its old-fashioned shop fronts and cafes in Rua Santa Catarina and the like. Ribeira district, Oporto

Alongside the Douro river in the 'Ribeira' district is the 'place to be seen', many of the old buildings having been restored and ronovated over the past few years.

Oporto's nightlife is now centred in Ribeira with it's fashionable restaurants. Naturally, we spent some time drinking and eating here:-)). Restaurants and Cafe to visit include:
Majestic Cafe
Guarany Cafe
O Caçula
Sumo
DTonho

On Thursday morning we left Oporto from São Bento railway station and headed towards Aveiro some 1 hour south of Oporto along the coast.

São Bento station, Oporto

Aveiro is a delightful little town surrounded by small canals, salt marshes and lagoons. The place had a very laid back atmosphere. Canals criss-cross the town spanned by small bridges; the graceful moliceiros as well as their mooring posts inevitably bringing to mind Venetian gondolas and their palli. Here we decided to spend another night before travelling on to Castelo Branco.

From Aveiro we made our way to Coimbra and then to Castelo Branco by coach arriving at Jini's around 4pm on Friday 16th.

Having rested up for a day we then went 'on the town' Saturday night with James - and experienced the delights of the newly opened 'Pippas' Irish Bar. We had a camera free evening so no photos of this event. The bar is located alongside numerous other bars and cafes in the newly developed centre of the town. Naturally, many of the tables were located outside and at 8:30 we were one of the first to arrive. After a few hours and a steady stream of people the place was absolutely packed. Even babies and small children played side by side with teenagers and adults - a rather different experience than in the UK. Anyway, to cut a long night short we arrived back at Jini's at 01:30 somewhat the worse for wear.
